The now and then
Most museums explore what happened once apon a time. A 1000 years ago. 10.000 years ago. Danmarks Forsorgsmuseum does both. We look back in time with specifically chosen items and dive into the presence as well – hear the story of the children who are placed in foster care or institutions as we speak.
The exhibition shows what?
With the exhibition Anbragt (in short: placement of children into care, institutions etc.), the museum focuses on the placement of children and raises questions as well as giving some answers from back then and very much right now. I collaboration with Torden & Lynild who produced the exhibition, we produced all of the installation films of questions and answers for two specific target groups: children and adults. For adults, films about displayed items feature conversations between former children of all kinds of placement. And children telling their story of being in system right at this moment.
The harsh reality
How do you narrate such harsh stories (and the good ones too)? Get the very real, very frightening words out without frightening the entire crowd? The films about the items are conversations. Weaved into conversations. A calm, heartfelt chat between two people who can share their stories, and in that way involve an audience in a secure way. Variation is a key word in the films, both in the stories told and the design, to suit the attention span of the audience, and a couple of them have been animated. Because we can do that too. Right at this moment.
